Safety First: Respiratory Protection and Best Practices Against Artificial Stone Silicosis

BE PROTECTED

Respiratory Protection

It is important to understand that it is not possible to safely fabricate artificial stone.  Artificial stone fabrication workers will not be safe from silicosis until the slab manufacturers change their deadly product.  In the meantime, a critical process for reducing artificial stone silicosis is ensuring that workers have access to and use the appropriate respiratory and other safety protection. The Stone Fabricators Network is dedicated to promoting awareness of respiratory safety standards and best practices to reduce silica dust exposure in the workplace. We provide guidelines on the selection, use, and maintenance of high-quality respirators, emphasizing their importance as a primary defense against airborne crystalline silica particles.

Our network advocates for workplaces to adopt stringent safety measures, including the provision of respiratory protection rated for artificial stone silica dust, such as P100 cartridge filter respirators and powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs). We encourage all employers and workers to implement the latest safety protocols, such as using wet cutting techniques, employing ventilation systems, and performing regular air quality monitoring to ensure safe working conditions.

Through the Stone Fabricators Network, workers have access to resources on respiratory safety and can stay informed about evolving industry standards and regulations. We collaborate with occupational health experts to provide training materials, ensuring that workers understand the proper fit, usage, and limitations of respirators. By prioritizing respiratory protection, we aim to prevent new cases of silicosis, safeguard workers’ health, and advocate for an industry-wide commitment to proactive safety.

SFN recommends the Stone Silicosis Center (SSC) for the most current safety resources for the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of artificial stone silicosis.  Contact SSC at stonesilicosis.com or (866) 809-5178.
